SOCCER FIELD REPLACEMENT - SAN ANTONIO ACADEMY
GENERAL INFORMATION
Building Name: San Antonio Academy
Building Location: San Antonio, Texas, United States
Project Type: Synthetic Turf Soccer Field
DESCRIPTION
Established in 1886, San Antonio Academy has a long history of excellence both in the classroom and on the football field. They hosted the first modern football game between the Academy and West Texas in San Antonio, Texas on March 10, 1894 and won.
GOALS
The Academy wanted to combine their rich tradition with modern, cutting edge facilities. San Antonio aimed to create a state of the art sports facility that could host multiple teams using it all year round. In addition, they wanted the field to play like real grass, stay cooler than other turf fields and prioritize student safety.
PROCESS
OVERVIEW
In order to address San Antonio’s needs, KYA Services teamed up with TenCate to design a full system including the pad, synthetic turf, infill and lighting. By working with a single manufacturer, KYA was able to procure and install all of the products both efficiently and effectively for a quick turnaround time.
CONSTRUCTION
PRODUCTS AND SYSTEMS
KYA and TenCate created a custom turf system for San Antonio Academy specifically engineered to emulate the characteristics of natural grass and clay and minimize issues with irregular hops and the trampoline effect. The system also incorporated GeoCoolTM, an alternative natural infill. With GeoCoolTM infill, turf surface temperature are 20-30 degrees cooler than traditional crumb rubber. In addition, a GeoSport LED lighting solution was customized and installed for San Antonio.
PROJECT RESULTS
“We are thrilled with the new field. We interviewed many companies and ultimately went with KYA because of their knowledge of the systems and their access to the best materials.” - Coach Nick Hillman
