DESCRIPTION

Fresno City College (FCC) is a public community college in Fresno, California. FCC is the first community college in the state of California and prides itself with 369 Conference Championships and 56 CCCAA State Championships. Notable Alumni include acclaimed poet Gary Soto and Lloyd Allen, a former Major League Baseball pitcher.

Goals

Originally built in the '70s, the FCC locker rooms were unusable with lockers that were too small to properly store equipment and uniforms and crumbling flooring. Fresno College wanted new flooring, showers and lockers with dimensions able to accommodate their football, baseball, soccer and track teams’ needs. In addition, they wanted to reconfigure the layout of the locker room to allow for a meeting area with benches to convene before and after games.

PROCESS

OVERVIEW

Utilizing KYA’s CollegeBuys contract, brokered by the Foundation for California Community Colleges, Fresno City College was able to procure the entire locker room project turnkey.

KYA worked closely with Fresno City College’s selected subcontractors to completely renew the inside of the locker rooms starting with the flooring. KYA then sourced lockers that would meet each sport’s requirements and installed benches, showers, and shower curtains to allow for comfort and privacy. To instill school spirit and pride, the locker room was painted with the school’s colors, including a custom mural of the school’s mascot on the floor of the meeting area.

CONSTRUCTION

PRODUCTS AND SYSTEMS

The FCC locker rooms received all-welded lockers, providing longer-lasting durability and shorter installation times. In addition, new flooring was installed using a robust urethane concrete. This industrial-grade concrete coating utilizes polymer urethane resin technology, effectively bonding engineered cement powder aggregate to form a resilient, high-performance floor.

Epoxy overlay was then poured above the concrete to create a more hygienic, slip-resistant surface. This flooring was used throughout the locker room, including dividers and up the shower walls to seal and create a monolithic, consistent flooring that is safer, durable and aesthetically pleasing.

PROJECT RESULTS

Fresno City College students and faculty were so pleased with their results that they asked KYA to extend the locker room renovations over to the adjacent bathrooms. Faculty members now utilize their new locker rooms to showcase the facilities they offer to their new althletic recruits. “Before, my players never even used the locker rooms, because they were in such bad shape,” said the women’s head soccer coach Oliver Germond. According to coaches, students can now access all field house activities more easily.
