EV Charging Station - SANTA ANA USD DISTRICT OFFICE BUILDING

GENERAL INFORMATION

Building Name: Santa Ana USD District Office Building

Building Location: Santa Ana, California, United States

Project Type: EV Charging Station

DESCRIPTION

The Santa Ana Unified School District was founded in 1888 and is the second largest school district in Orange County, California. It serves most of the city of Santa Ana and some parts of Irvine, Tustin, Costa Mesa and Newport Beach. The district office building serves as both an office space for about 500 employees as well as an assembly hall for congregations hosting families of students and other stakeholders. The district also committed to providing the best resources for its community as part of their new Facilities Master Plan.

GOALS

The district’s EV charger installation was designed to promote energy-efficient vehicles and advance technological capabilities to support sustainability efforts. The district requested a total of nine charger ports including one with handicap access. The addition of these stations also aligns with the district’s goals of reducing carbon footprints and fostering an eco-friendly environment for students and staff.

PROCESS

OVERVIEW

KYA efficiently oversaw trusted subcontractors to complete the project in just over one month. The preconstruction process took about three months to procure and prepare for the project with the sufficient power needed to support the office year-round.

CONSTRUCTION

PRODUCTS AND SYSTEMS

KYA’s team began by installing necessary safety fencing to operate during business hours. They cleared the area and demolished the asphalt to begin trenching for underground conduit from the charging ports, to the nearby switchboard and back to the district building’s main electric room. Upon completion of the conduit work, the team began formwork and concrete placement to make the raised island on which the charger ports sit. Electrical feed was then routed from the main electrical room to each charger port under the raised island. Safety bollards were installed to provide additional protection to the charging ports. The team concluded with minor asphalt repairs and re-striped parking markers for the standard and handicap accessible EV charging stalls.

PROJECT RESULTS

KYA completed the installation efficiently during school hours ensuring a seamless transition for district office employees. Faculty appreciated the sustainable solutions and the enhanced convenience to adopt them. The EV charging stations also set a positive example for the community, showcasing the district’s dedication to innovation.
