SYNTHETIC NON-INFILL TURF SOCCER FIELD - LINCOLN UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT
GENERAL INFORMATION
Building Name: Lincoln Unified School District
Building Location: Stockton, California, United States
Project Type: Synthetic Turf Soccer Field
DESCRIPTION
Lincoln Unified School District, located in Stockton, California, serves a diverse community of students across unique elementary, middle and high schools. With a focus on fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment, the district encourages innovation and community engagement.
GOALS
Faced with uneven and aging natural grass fields, Lincoln USD envisioned a solution that would not only address the practical challenges but also align with their values of sustainability and innovation. Partnering with KYA, they set out to transform their deteriorating fields into a modern, durable and low-maintenance synthetic turf system that would benefit students and the broader community alike.
PROCESS
OVERVIEW
KYA began the project by leveraging the California Multiple Award Schedule (CMAS) buying contract, simplifying the procurement process and accelerating project timelines. KYA and partners ensured proper site preparation, including grading and drainage, to create a level, high-performing field tailored to the district’s specific needs. As site preparation were underway, the team uncovered a unique challenge: the school’s proximity to the Delta rivers had resulted in evaporative soils that could compromise the field’s long-term stability.
CONSTRUCTION
PRODUCTS AND SYSTEMS
KYA transformed the grass field into a cutting-edge, non-infill synthetic turf system designed for soccer and flag football. Over 103,000 square feet of grass and soil were cleared to a depth of 4 inches, with existing irrigation lines capped and six quick couplers installed around the field’s perimeter. To build a robust base, more than 100 tons of compacted AB material were applied, followed by a limestone treatment to address soil conditions. The field was meticulously re-graded to ensure proper drainage, surrounded by a 2,800-linear-foot header board, and layered with a 15mm Max-Flo sports pad and 1 1/4-inch Pivot Zero Fill turf. This innovative design eliminates the need for traditional sand or rubber infill, offering a sustainable and maintenance-friendly surface ready for all-weather play.
PROJECT RESULTS
The completed project exceeded expectations, leaving Lincoln USD thrilled with the sleek, professional appearance and cutting-edge functionality of their new turf system. Beyond the practical benefits, the upgrade elevated the facility’s aesthetics and enhanced its value to the community, positioning the district as a leader in sustainable innovation. Building on the success of this project, KYA looks forward to continuing their partnership with Lincoln USD to bring similar advancements to other fields, including baseball and softball.
