DESCRIPTION
El Capitan High School is part of the Merced Union High School District in Merced, California. Recognizing the community’s strong emphasis on sustainability, the school is dedicated to fostering a culture of environmental sustainability while offering enriching learning experiences to its students.
GOALS
The school sought to install a 24’x48’ greenhouse that would serve as a hub for experiential learning in the fields of agriculture, environmental science and sustainability. The greenhouse would provide students with a space to develop practical skills as well as to cultivate a passion for sustainability and guide students toward careers that promote environmental well-being.
PROCESS
OVERVIEW
Working in partnership with subcontractors, KYA was able to quickly source the necessary materials and services, allowing the greenhouse to be constructed in a timely manner while exceeding the school’s standards. This collaborative process was designed to maximize the efficiency and impact of the project, aligning with the district’s objectives of creating an engaging learning environment.
CONSTRUCTION
PRODUCTS AND SYSTEMS
KYA managed every essential aspect of the installation from planning to final construction. KYA first worked with the school to identify the most suitable location for the greenhouse on the campus, considering accessibility and infrastructure requirements. The construction process began with the necessary earthwork to create a stable foundation, followed by the pouring of a concrete pad designed to support the greenhouse structure. KYA also coordinated the installation of additional electrical systems to power the greenhouse’s environmental control systems, ensuring the space would operate sustainably and efficiently.
PROJECT RESULTS
The completion of the greenhouse was a major success, providing El Capitan High School with a state-of-the-art facility that significantly enhances the student learning experience. The greenhouse has become a cornerstone of the school’s environmental education efforts and directly supports the district’s goals for equity and career readiness, providing students with the skills and knowledge they need to pursue careers focused on environmental sustainability.
