PLAYGROUND/FLOORING MODERNIZATION - VALLEY CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL
GENERAL INFORMATION
Building Name: Valley Children’s Hospital
Building Location: Madera, California, United States
Project Type: Playground and Flooring Modernization
DESCRIPTION
Valley Children’s Hospital (VCH) began as the vision of 5 civic-minded women who saw the need for a dedicated pediatric hospital in Central California. During its 70 years, VCH has evolved from a 42-bed hospital in 1952 to a 358-bed, nationally respected pediatric healthcare network. Today, with more than 670 physicians and 3,500 staff, VCH delivers comprehensive care to more than 1.3 million children in their service area.
GOALS
VCH wanted to upgrade its main kitchen floor and address the needs of two of its playground areas. They wanted new flooring that was easy to maintain, slip-resistant, and long-lasting while incorporating their color scheme to match the existing design. For the Outpatient Physical Therapy (PT) facility playgrounds, they wanted to replace the play equipment, surfacing, and shade structures on the Westside, provide a new shade structure, and resurface the existing playground area to improve safety and appearance on the Eastside.
PROCESS
OVERVIEW
KYA helped VCH identify the core reason they had issues with their main kitchen floor and provided a solution to incorporate the new flooring material. All of this work was accomplished while the main kitchen continued to provide essential services. The playground areas were assessed, VCH chose material and colors, and then KYA executed the projects.
CONSTRUCTION
PRODUCTS AND SYSTEMS
To comply with the Office of Statewide Health Planning & Development (OSHPD) regulations, KYA implemented rigorous protocols for the kitchen renovation, which included full containment of the work area at all times to ensure safety. Existing kitchen equipment was carefully moved and secured to avoid any disruption in service, removing existing flooring and applying a specially formulated densifier into the concrete foundation. This was followed by the installation of a Urethane Concrete with Epoxy overlay flooring system. Upon completion of each phase, KYA crews repositioned and secured all kitchen equipment, ensuring adherence to OSHPD standards.
The Westside PT facility playground project focused on enhancing the play areas for children by removing the existing playground equipment and shades to make way for a new, age-appropriate play structure. A synthetic turf playground surfacing system was installed, providing a safe and durable play surface and new shade sails were added above the play area to provide sun coverage and improve the comfort of users.
PROJECT RESULTS
The project was completed on time and passed all OSHPD inspections. Valley Children’s was pleased with the speed and accuracy that KYA demonstrated during the entire process of each project. The successful completion of these projects highlights KYA's commitment to maintaining high standards of safety and functionality while delivering modern, improved facilities for both kitchen operations and recreational use.
