GYM FLOOR RESURFACING - ROUND MOUNTAIN K-12 SCHOOL
GENERAL INFORMATION
Building Name: Round Mountain K-12 School
Building Location: Round Mountain, Nevada, United States
Project Type: Gym Floor Resurfacing
DESCRIPTION
Round Mountain K-12 School is a public school in Nye County School District, located in the remote mining town of Round Mountain, Nevada; 52 miles from the nearest interstate highway. The school is home to about 270 students ranging from kindergarten to twelfth grade.
GOALS
The school’s gymnasium court was in need of minor repairs after many years of spirited use. The floor was lightly worn with scratches, dents and chipped paint. The school also requested a last-minute installation of a small memorial on the sideline dedicated to their late volleyball coach.
PROCESS
OVERVIEW
Leveraging KYA’s many partnerships, the school was able to complete the court refinishing project right on schedule. KYA worked closely with the school as a single point of contact for subcontractors along every step of the project. The district partnered with KYA for all upkeep and maintenance.
CONSTRUCTION
PRODUCTS AND SYSTEMS
Industrial floor sanders with aggressive sandpaper were used to remove the old coats of finish and then a finer sandpaper was used for a smooth wood finish. Two coats of sealer were applied using floor applicators and then resanded with 400 grit sandpaper for a smooth finish. The floor was then striped with two coats of paint for one full size basketball court, two smaller courts and one volleyball court with logo and sideline memorial. The court was finally completed with three top coats of finish for maximum shine.
PROJECT RESULTS
Round Mountain School was thrilled with the quality of the end result. They were especially impressed with the project’s completion in just one week despite transportation challenges that came with the school’s remote location. The addition of the new court elevated the overall atmosphere of Round Mountain’s gymnasium, fostering a stronger sense of school pride among its students, faculty and fans.
